The Department of "General hygiene" was organized in 1941. The first head of the Department was Professor Vladimir Petrovich Malyshev, who previously held the position of head of the sanitary-hygienic Department of the sanitary-bacteriological Institute.
In 1942, the Department was headed by doctor of medical Sciences, Professor Berestechko Lev Efimovich, who gave a deep development of hygienic science in the country. In 1945, Lev Efimovich was the Dean of the faculty of hygiene and the Department was headed by Professor Felix Stanislavovich Okolov known for scientific works on food hygiene and successfully developed this area of hygienic research.
In 1956, the Department was headed by Professor Gudzovskiy Georgiy Aleksandrovich. From 1956 till 1962 the head of the Department was A.Boyko
In this period should be noted the high productivity of scientific and pedagogical work at the Department. Much attention was paid to the education of young professionals. Postgraduate and doctoral students of the Department carried out a number of major research in various areas of hygiene. The results of scientific research have been successfully completed in the form of a number of doctoral and master's theses and marked by high government awards. Future Professor Perelygin Veniamin Mikhailovich has prepared thesis on the sanitary and hygienic characteristics of sugar factories in Kyrgyzstan at the Department of "General hygiene", headed the only at that time research Institute of the Ministry of health - the INSTITUTE of epidemiology, Microbiology and hygiene.
Developed within decades the scientific and pedagogical potential has allowed the Department successfully develop in the next years.
The Department was headed by Professors as: Ryspaev Sapar (1962 - 1978гг.); Professor Mambetaliev Budin (1978 - 1998)-laureate of the National Award, doctor of Sciences, ; Professor Omor Kasymov (1998 and 2005)- laureate of the National Award, doctor of Sciences.
Currently the Department is headed by associate Professor Djorbaev Anna Asanovna.
Educational and methodical work of the department
Students of the faculties "Medicine, Pediatrics, Stomatology, Pharmacy, VSO and Medical Engineering" are trained at the department
Priority directions of improvement of educational process at the department are:
- Development of new working programs, lectures, teaching aids and methodical recommendations for practical and laboratory classes in accordance with the requirements of state general education standards, standard curricula and qualification characteristics of specialists;
- Improvement of training programs and thematic plans, making changes and additions to them, conditioned by modern achievements of hygienic science;
- Introduction of innovative forms and methods of training;
- Deepening of interaction of the department with hygienic and clinical departments in order to improve the quality of theoretical and practical training of students.
- Development of methodical recommendations on all sections of general hygiene.
Lecture material is constantly updated with the achievements of modern hygienic science, prepared electronic versions of lectures in the form of presentations for all training programs.
In work with students a variety of androgogical technologies are used, including experimental methods and forms of teaching, such as problem-based learning (PBL - Problem-based learning); task-based learning (TBL - task-based learning); team-based learning (TBL - team-based learning); person-centered learning (SCL - student-centered learning); research-based learning (RBL - research-based learning); project-based learning (PBL - project-based learning).
A special role is assigned to independent work of students. For all sections of hygiene, the topics of independent work are developed, the content and procedure of carrying out are worked out.
The system of evaluation of the quality of work of employees in the line of the quality management system of education, taking into account all aspects of teacher's activities. According to the approved schedule at the department is held mutual attendance of lectures and practical classes, organized duty of teachers on the reception of work-offs, regularly submitted reports on progress. The results of this work are recorded in departmental journals and discussed at departmental meetings.
Research activities
Research activities of the department today are focused on the study of nutrition and assessment of working conditions of different population groups, as well as environmental-hygienic studies to assess the quality of drinking water, air, radioecological studies.
The staff of the department are directly involved in the implementation of the health care reform program, are engaged in the development of a system of socio-hygienic monitoring. Special attention is paid to scientific substantiation of population health monitoring in connection with the impact of environmental factors and risk assessment.
With the consultative assistance of the department's staff, the development of normative legal documents in the field of public health, water supply safety, food safety, technical regulation is carried out.

The staff of the department participate in the realization of 2 international projects:
- Project "Introduction of multilevel education system in nursing to improve the overall clinical competence and capacity of nurses to respond to pandemic disasters". Project Goal: Improve the quality of higher nursing education, support in strengthening the capacity to respond to infectious diseases in Bishkek. Project objectives include: Improvement of Higher Nursing Education, Development of State Standard of Higher Education, implementation and operation of Bachelor's Degree Program in Nursing and accelerated training, implementation and operation of Primary Specialization Program in Nursing, implementation and operation of Master's Degree Program in Nursing, improvement of educational environment. Improving the competence of the teaching staff, strengthening the capacity to collect and analyze medical data, organizing and operating a room to strengthen research skills, improving the capacity to respond to infectious diseases in residential areas of Bishkek, training PHC medical staff to respond to infectious diseases, systematizing the collection of data on infectious diseases, developing and implementing a system of data collection and analysis on infectious diseases.

Within the framework of this project the Head of the Department, Candidate of Medical Sciences Sultashev A. with a poster presentation took part in the 34th International
Research Congress on Nursing Sigma.
Participation in the congress allowed exchanging experience with colleagues from different countries. Experience gained in the field of scientific research presented at the congress gave an opportunity to help nurses in the realization of scientific career and increase the internal motivation for improvement and development among nurses in Kyrgyzstan.
- Project "Green and Digital Universities for the Development of Kyrgyzstan" (GREEN KG). The aim of the project is to create a national model of "Green and Digital University", which will be harmonized with the EU Green Deal and the national strategy to improve the level of education. The project to develop and adapt the green system and connect to HEIs in Kyrgyzstan to support university students towards increased knowledge and capacity to develop and implement green and digital university policies. The Green and Digital University model involves the establishment of Green Digital Offices (GDOs) to implement the concept of smart management aimed at minimizing negative impacts on the surrounding space, the university campus based on energy and resource conservation and the minor development of green ideas in society. The project includes partnership with 10 universities in Kyrgyzstan, as well as Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and Vilnius University (Lithuania), and Capacity Building Consulting Group. The project was launched on January 11, 2023 under the financial support of the EU Erasmus+ program.
Within the framework of the project, the working group with the participation of the department staff Sultashev A.J. and Ryskeldieva J.B. conducted work with a focus group consisting of academic staff and representatives of administrative structures.
As a result of data analysis it was possible to analyze the current state of digital infrastructure of KGMA to identify weaknesses and potential opportunities for modernization of sustainability and green digital transformation. On April 11, 2024 the students of the 3rd course of the 39th group of the medical faculty of KSMA named after I.K.Akhunbaev together with the curator, assistant of the department of general hygiene Egemberdiyeva Gulina Toktogulovna visited Bishkek city boarding house of general type for the elderly and people with disabilities. The students washed the porch, cleaned the yard, stored garbage, washed dishes, hung curtains, and changed linens.
