For the first time in KSMA, the Department of Family Medicine (FM) was established in 1999 on the basis of the associate professor course of polyclinic therapy of the Internal Diseases Department No. 1, headed by Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Kyrgyz Republic Academy of Sciences, MD, prof. MM. Mirrakhimov. The associate professor course of outpatient therapy was established on August 28 in 1991, and it was headed by Honored Doctor of the Kyrgyz Republic, Associate Professor A.O. Aitkulova.
On October 1, 1999, the course was reorganized into an independent department of family medicine, headed by prof. T.S. Meimanaliev. A great contribution to the development of family medicine in Kyrgyzstan was made by Assoc. G.K. Nanaev. Under her leadership, new curricula were developed for the course of FM at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and the training of doctors in FM in Kyrgyzstan began. However, in 2004, the Department of Family Medicine was reduced to a course of polyclinic therapy.
In February 2017, in accordance with the needs of the country's health care, the independent department of family medicine was revived, and prof. N.N. Brimkulov was headed. At the department, in accordance with international requirements, curricula were revised, new educational and methodological materials were developed (Catalogs of competencies, Diary of a resident), modern approaches for monitoring and evaluation were introduced. Multifaceted work with students on the basis of a scientific circle, holding "open meetings" with graduates, attracting students to organize conferences and congresses with the participation of world leaders in family medicine has led to a sharp increase in residents. Thus, in August 2018, the number of applicants for residency reached 56, which is 28 times higher than in 2015. The sharply increased volume of educational and methodological work required strengthening the human resources potential of the university in family medicine. In this regard, in September 2018, the department was reorganized into two departments, namely undergraduate family medicine and postgraduate family medicine.
From September 1, 2018, the leadership of the Family Medicine Postgraduate Education Department was entrusted to prof. Brimkulov N. N.
Since July 2021, the staffs of the department have been a member of the voluntary public non-profit organization "Family Medicine Without Borders".
Since 2017, a professional standard, SOP (standard of operating procedures) have been developed.
Student Scientific Group (SSG):

On the basis of students research, articles are published, poster presentations are prepared for the annual conference of clinical residents of family medicine.
Clinical work is carried out in the form of participation of students in the reception of patients together with the doctors of the Family Medicine Center.
The main base of the department is the I.K. Akhunbaev KSMA Family Medicine Center. Equipped in accordance with international standards and was opened on March 16, 2022. The family doctor Abdullaev Taalaibek Orozovich is in charge of the center.
The main direction of the department is the training of residents in the specialty "Family Medicine / General Medical Practice", the promotion of the specialty and its development in all aspects - academic, scientific, professional and social.
In the short period of existence of the department, the curriculum has been revised, teaching aids and materials have been published, modern methods of monitoring and evaluation are being introduced. Elements of telemedicine are being actively introduced into the learning process (distance lectures, online counseling via WhatsApp, etc.). The department is actively implementing the decentralization program for postgraduate education and has presented the first positive results of practical training at regional clinical sites. Monitoring of efficiency of decentralization with departure on all regions of the republic is introduced.
The staff of the department came up with a number of initiatives aimed at improving the image of the specialty of a family doctor:
